Across a Multi-Tool Semiconductor Fab
Dimension | Situation / Before | Mindteck Outcome |
Recipe control | Distributed, tool-local — version conflicts | Centralised, version-controlled, single source of truth |
Recipe deployment | Manual, slow, error-prone | Automated with full audit trail |
Compliance | Difficult to audit across tools | Full traceability — every change, every tool |
A semiconductor fab was managing process recipes — the precise set of parameters governing each manufacturing step — on a tool-by-tool basis. Recipes existed in multiple versions across different tools, recipe updates were deployed manually, and there was no central audit trail for recipe changes. In an environment where a single-parameter deviation can affect wafer yield across an entire production run, this decentralised, manual approach created significant quality risk and compliance exposure — particularly as the fab scaled and added new tools to the fleet.
Designed and implemented a Centralised Recipe Management Server (CRMS) providing a single, authoritative repository for all process recipes across all tools in the fab
Built a version control and approval workflow for recipe management — requiring defined review and sign-off before any recipe change could be deployed to production tools
Implemented automated recipe distribution to target tools, replacing manual recipe uploads with a controlled, logged deployment process
Developed a complete audit trail capturing every recipe change, approval event, and deployment action — with timestamps, author attribution, and before/after version comparisons
Integrated the CRMS with the fab's existing MES and equipment communications infrastructure using SEMI standards-compliant interfaces
In a semiconductor fab, a recipe is not just a file — it is the specification for a manufacturing process. Managing it with the rigour it deserves requires a purpose-built system. |
The fab moved from a distributed, tool-local recipe management approach to a centralised, version-controlled system that gave engineers a single authoritative view of every process recipe across every tool. Recipe deployment errors were eliminated. The audit trail transformed compliance posture — inspections and root cause analyses that previously required manual record reconstruction now had complete, timestamped documentation available on demand. The CRMS became a foundational component of the fab's quality management infrastructure, supporting ongoing process improvement and regulatory compliance.
